Getting a Mani-Pedi for a woman is like going into a candy store for a child. There are so many colors and brands and exciting possibilities. It’s an adventure and you never quite know what you’re going to end up with. While Hershey’s has competitors like Mars and Nestle, the nail polish industry has pretty much been taken over by OPI. And while I am not a fan of monopolies… I do love OPI.
Once upon a time, women only painted their nails red: dark red, light red (pink) or medium red were pretty much the only choices of nail self-expression. Today, nail polish comes in a variety of bizarre colors from yellow to green… and every color in between.
When I was growing up, I loved painting my toe nails red, because I was able to pretend I was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and would always have my trusty ruby slippers nearby. Today, I like to mix it up. Sometimes I’m in a Pamplona purple mood, other times I go for metallics like Your Royal Shine-ness, blues like Yodel Me on My Cell, funky oranges like Mod-ern Girl or dramatic blacks like Get in the Expresso Lane. When I walk into the salon, I have a 100+ options staring at me in the face and, eventually, a mood takes over and a color is chosen. And as women, it’s our prerogative to change our minds… so while you may feel like Jade is the New Black one day, you can always switch to another color the next. It’s as easy as a couple of rubs of nail polish remover.
And it’s less fattening than chocolate.
